Thank you so much for your condolences...
Your card was completely unexpected, but so typical of the extra thought that Abbeydale put in to customer care.
I looked at a number of Nursing Homes in the Derby area when it became clear that it would be impossible for me to continue caring for [my wife] at home, trying to find somewhere I thought would provide proper care and be an acceptable place to live. Every visit left me more dismayed at what was on offer, and I began to think that I would never find anywhere I would be happy for her to go to. My visit to Abbeydale changed that completely.
The immediate impression was of competent, helpfull staff in a pleasant environment. People seemed happy to work there. You then talked to me for over an hour about the Abbeydale approach to residential care and after a tour of the facilities I was in no doubt that my wife would be professionally looked after there. This was so different from everywhere else I had seen.
[My wife's] subsequent life at the Home underlied those first impressions. Staff were always helpful, answering questions and providing information whenever I had a query and everyone seemed anxious to ensure she had the best possible quality of life. Efforts were clearly made to involve her in activities which suited her abilities and preferences, and constant attention was paid to her physical condition and well being.
I felt that all the staff really cared about her and I think [she] also realised this. Although her Alzheimers made communication difficult, I have no doubt she felt safe and well looked after.
On a number of occasions staff even asked me how I was coping with the stress of [her] deterioration and I am sure that there concern was genuine.
My grandchildren always really enjoyed going to Abbeydale to visit their granny, referring to it as 'The Care Home'. I think they got that exactly right.
